Synchronizing the needs of a modern urban society has become increasingly complex due to diversification and globalization. How can citizens participate in order to strengthen the identity of a city and to shape urban coexistence on an equal footing? Cultural projects and initiatives have the possibility to contribute to more equality and integration, to vitalize the society and to promote the participation of the inhabitants. In addition, culture helps citizens to understand each other, thus strengthening social cohesion and increasing the quality of life in the city. This requires strategies and concepts on how a participatory urban culture can succeed.

Cultural development as a driver of structural change
Dorothee Starke Head of the Cultural Office Bremerhaven President INTHEGA
City of emigration, fishing, shipbuilding, offshore wind industry, climate city - the not even 200-year-old city of Bremerhaven is a city of upheavals, repositioning and also crises. In its processes of change, Bremerhaven has always moved a lot with its cultural offerings. Currently, a completely new city district is being conceived in the form of the Werftquartier (shipyard district), and industrial wastelands in the city center are being rethought. Urban development means cultural development, a path that quickly reaches its limits, however, due to tight financial constraints.

Training ground for democracy: „ZukunftsArena Sport und Kultur“
Dr. Birgit Schneider-Bönninger Assistant City Councillor for Sport and Culture of the Federal City of Bonn
In Bonn's "ZukunftsArena", the emancipatory potential of sport and culture is being used for participatory urban design. The creative collision of the two worlds gives rise to inspiring spaces of possibility and new urban cultures. Sportsmen and women and cultural workers jointly conquer public space ("OpernRasen"), transform sports facilities into pulsating creative areas and get cultural temples moving. The innovative synergy model inspires a strong sense of WE and gets people from all nations, generations and social backgrounds excited about positive urban utopias.

Cultural spectra and interaction
Noosha Aubel
Councillor for Education, Culture and Sport of the State Capital Potsdam
Municipal cultural policy is characterized by its proximity to all the actors associated with it. In addition to international festivals such as the Potsdam Sanssouci Music Festival or the municipal Hans Otto Theater, there is a large number of independent groups, initiatives and independent artists who give the city its face and shape the urban identity. The lecture will focus on the broad spectrum of the cultural scene in the state capital and its various forms of interaction.

About the emergence of KulturMachtPotsdam.
Heike Bohmann
Nikolaisaal Potsdam, Managing Director
KulturMachtPotsdam is a platform of Potsdam's art and cultural landscape: Solidary. Supportive. Strong. Visible. Independent. Art and culture are the engine and platform for illuminating social challenges with a critical eye. As places of democratic participation, critical discourse and the development of social utopias, cultural and social spaces are currently more necessary than ever. It is important to KulturMachtPotsdam that the social significance of art and culture for Potsdam be communicated to the outside world and that as many cultural actors as possible be involved. An attitude of solidarity is the focus of the network's activities, because culture makes Potsdam. The network was initiated in spring 2020.
