GLUT (“BLAZE“). Siegfried of Arabia.
Imagine a train in the middle of the Orient on its way through the desert to the Persian oil fields of the British. With one very special wagon: the traveling circus “Notung” – its passengers: performers, fire-eaters, singers, musicians. They perform the saga of the Nibelungs and travel acting as its heroes Siegfried, King Gunther, Hagen or Brunhild. At first sight, they seem like a gang of jugglers. However, hidden under suitcases filled with costumes, the train is loaded with guns and explosives. These heroes of the Nibelung are actually German officers in disguise in the middle of World War I. Under Captain Klein’s leadership, they are on a mission to blow up the British oil fields in Persia. Surrounded by enemies, Klein’s Nibelung circus has to perform well. If their disguise fails, they are dead.
Albert Ostermaier’s GLUT is based on a real historic incident and artfully combines the saga of the Nibelungs with a hardly known chapter of German history. This train ride is like a totally crazy Orient Express: full of anarchy, humor, political schemes and ambiguities. Just as Captain Klein and his false heroes travel through the orient – in a grotesque travesty on a secret mission with an open ending -, the real Nibelungs are on their way from Burgundy to King Etzel’s court, where in the end of the Song of the Nibelungs not only a banquet awaits them, but also their doom.
