Welcoming Addresses for the 11th CultureInvest! Congress and the 14th European Cultural Brand Award

Welcoming Address by the Chairman of the Jury of the European Cultural Brand Award

Prof. Dr. Oliver Scheytt

Since 2009, the CultureInvest! Congress has successfully brought together well-known figures from the worlds of culture, business and politics from all overEurope. They all focus on the changes in cultural management, marketing, investments and the creative alliances between the various institutions and their protagonists. The CultureInvest! Congress discusses innovative issues, especially European ones; it provides significant impulses inEuropethrough the exchange of ideas on the interaction between culture and business. Cultural institutions live from the personalities working for them who are deeply committed to the cause. Executives, both in business and in culture, should be able to recognise these and other trends develop concepts, mobilise potential and control processes.

Not least the European Cultural Brand Award has played a major role in bringing professionalism to this field over the past twelve years. Together with the CultureInvest! Congress, it forms a unique forum for the exchange of ideas and the further development of cultural brands in cooperation of all important players. Fortunately, it is very obvious that quality and individuality in art and culture, on the one hand, and economic efficiency, on the other, are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, they can mutually enrich each other. The European Cultural Brand Award has set itself the task of making the potential of cultural institutions and cities visible, using creativity as an inexhaustible source of energy and strengthens the networking of cultural and economic players.

The CultureInvest! Congress and the award ceremony for the European Cultural Brand Awards 2019 will be held for the first time on the site of the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein, highlighting the latest trends in the European cultural market and presenting future perspectives for cooperations between business, culture and politics. I am looking forward to interesting encounters and dialogues in 2019 and recommend that you become part of this network.

Welcoming Address by the Chairman of the Board of the Zollverein Foundation

Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Noll

When the CultureInvest! Congress together with the European Cultural Brand Award takes place for the first time in 2019 at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein inEssen, the "Most Beautiful Colliery in the World" will present itself as a tourist attraction and at the same time as a young powerhouse of the creative industry. With 1.5 million visitors a year to theRuhrMuseum, theRedDotDesignMuseum, the protected above-ground facilities plus many events and cultural events, Zollverein with its famous double trestle winding tower is a landmark of theRuhrarea, a projection screen for our industrial history and a symbol of the region's far-reaching transformation process.

However, Zollverein is much more than a museum. In recent years, the World Heritage Site has evolved into an educational campus and a growing business location. A new building for the Design Department of theFolkwangUniversityof the Arts has been erected on the former material storage area of the founder's shaft. Since the 2017/18 winter semester, the university has been in operation with around 500 students and 70 employees. Almost 50 companies from the creative sector are now based at Zollverein - including "Schacht one" and, more recently, "Accenture" - both think tanks that advise companies on digitisation processes. With the Grand Hall Zollverein, a state-of-the-art event hall for up to 2,500 guests has been created in the former gas drainage and compressor hall on the coking plant. It has been meticulously restored to its original condition and is successfully run by a private operating company.

We want to present this development to the active players in the European cultural market and jointly define future perspectives for the creative industries. The CultureInvest! Congress and the award ceremony of the European Cultural Brand Awards at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein with guests from all over Europe is the perfect stimulus for this. We call on you to become an active part of this new power plant for the creative economy!

Welcoming Address by the Organiser of the CultureInvest! Congress and Initiator of the European Cultural Brand Award

Prof. Dr. Oliver Scheytt

Since 2009, the CultureInvest! Congress has been promoting the transfer of knowledge on all relevant cultural matters, highlighting the latest trends in the cultural market. Within just ten years, the Congress has grown into the largest forum for cultural providers and promoters in Europe. For two days each year, European decision-makers from the worlds of culture, business, politics and the media come together and use the ever-growing network to exchange their experiences und views, developing their visions for the European cultural market. Strong partners from the business world enable this unique congress format to be staged with specialist media ensuring a high profile in the relevant cultural and business markets.

Thanks to the invitation of the Zollverein Foundation to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein and the generous support of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, we are able to organise the two-day CultureInvest! Congress 2019 in six industrial halls on the atmospheric site of the "Most Beautiful Colliery in the World". The history of hard coal mining as a main source of our prosperity and the founding of the Montan-Union as the basis for a modern, united Europe, together with the transformation process of the industrial society into a creative service society, have motivated us to this year's motto "Setting out into a new era".

With the farewell to coal and the closure of the last colliery Prosper Haniel in 2018, the age of coal and thus a significant period of European history has come to an end. We wish to accompany and support with our events in 2019 at Zollverein the structural change that was already initiated 10 years ago by the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010,  bringing to light new ideas for theRuhrregion as a conurbation of creative services, providing a great networking opportunity for actors in the European cultural market. The CultureInvest! Congress 2019 wishes also to give something back to those who have ensured Germany's prosperity for decades, namely the legendary miners in the Ruhrregion.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein - the colliery of superlatives and the landmark of the Ruhr area - is an ideal projection screen forEurope's largest cultural congress and its participants to produce creative and sustainable ideas amidst deep social change. On November 7 and 8 2019 we will welcome 750 attendees from all overEuropewith the support of over 100 speakers and moderators. In this way, the Zollverein colliery becomes the largest think tank on the European cultural market; the world-famous double trestle winding tower symbolises the dawn of a new era! We would like to invite you to be part of this unique transfer of knowledge and experience, sharing the great emotions at the ceremony of the European Cultural Brand Award, which is, indeed, is the most advanced cultural award in Europe!
